In modern water and industrial piping systems, the dual plate wafer check valve is the standard choice for backflow prevention. Its compact design, low weight, and spring-assisted rapid closure effectively protect pumps and equipment from water hammer.
However, in demanding environments—particularly those involving seawater, brackish water, or mildly corrosive chemicals—the internal components of a standard check valve can face rapid degradation. This is where material selection becomes critical.
This article examines a specific, highly durable configuration recently manufactured at our facility: a Ductile Iron (DI) body with C95400 Aluminum Bronze discs and an EPDM seat.
For check valves operating in marine or highly humid environments, standard stainless steel or coated cast iron discs often face challenges. Chloride ions in seawater can cause pitting corrosion in standard 304 or even 316 stainless steel over long periods. Additionally, marine organisms can accumulate (bio-fouling) on the disc surfaces, affecting the valve's sealing capability.
To address these issues, selecting a material with inherent resistance to both corrosion and biological buildup is necessary.
As seen in the manufacturing photos, the dual discs are cast and clearly stamped with "C954". This refers to UNS C95400, a high-strength aluminum bronze alloy containing approximately 10-11.5% aluminum and 3-5% iron.
Why is C95400 chosen for check valve discs?
1. Superior Seawater Resistance: Aluminum bronze forms a protective, adherent oxide film that resists chloride attack. It is widely recognized as one of the best metallic materials for seawater applications.
2. Resistance to Bio-fouling: Copper-based alloys are toxic to marine organisms. This prevents barnacles and algae from attaching to the disc, ensuring the valve remains operational and tightly sealed.
3. High Mechanical Strength: With tensile strengths comparable to carbon steel, C95400 resists the mechanical shock of rapid closure and high-velocity flow without deformation.
4. Abrasion Resistance: It performs well in systems where the media may contain small amounts of suspended solids.
To create a balanced and cost-effective valve, the aluminum bronze discs are paired with other carefully selected materials:
Ductile Iron (DI) Body: The body provides excellent structural rigidity and pressure containment. It is typically coated with an external epoxy layer to prevent atmospheric corrosion. Using DI for the body rather than a full bronze or stainless steel casting significantly reduces the overall cost of the valve.
EPDM Seat: The rubber seat is essential for achieving a bubble-tight seal. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is an excellent choice for water, seawater, and dilute chemical solutions. It offers a broad operating temperature range and good resistance to weathering and water treatment chemicals like chlorine.
Stainless Steel Spring & Shaft: The central shaft and the torsion springs (visible in the photo) are typically made of stainless steel (such as SS316 or SS304) to ensure they provide reliable, continuous spring-assisted closure without rusting.
The combination of a DI body, C954 aluminum bronze discs, and an EPDM seat makes this dual plate check valve particularly suitable for:
Seawater cooling systems in coastal power plants or marine vessels.
Desalination plants (reverse osmosis intake and discharge lines).
Chemical processing where mild corrosive fluids are handled.
Wastewater treatment and municipal water distribution.
Choosing the correct valve requires a deep understanding of how materials interact with the process media. At Tianjin Worlds Valve Co., Ltd., we manufacture dual plate check valves with customizable material configurations to meet your specific project requirements.
As a direct OEM/ODM manufacturer with over 19 years of export experience, we operate under an LRQA-certified ISO 9001:2015 quality management system. Our pressure equipment is compliant with CE/PED 2014/68/EU (Module H) and UKCA standards. Every valve undergoes 100% pressure testing before delivery.
