A dual plate wafer check valve is a spring-assisted, non-return valve engineered to prevent backflow in liquid and gas piping systems. Compared to conventional swing check valves–which rely on a single, heavy disc that swings on a hinge–the dual plate design uses two lightweight, semicircular discs that open and close with the flow. The result: faster dynamic response, significantly lower weight, and a much smaller pressure drop across the valve.
The wafer body is sandwiched directly between two pipeline flanges using through-bolts. There are no flanges on the valve itself, which keeps the face-to-face dimension short and the overall weight low. In a typical piping layout, this can mean up to 85% weight savings over a flanged swing check valve of the same size–a difference that matters when you're designing pipe supports or working in a congested pump station.
This model features a ductile iron body (GGG40/500-7) with the internal bore fully lined in EPDM, a CF8M stainless steel disc (AISI 316) for corrosion resistance on the exposed metal surfaces, and is rated at PN10 (10 bar / 145 psi) . The EPDM seat is vulcanized (cured) directly onto the valve body, forming a permanent, chemical bond that eliminates leak paths between the seat and body–a critical advantage in applications where reliability and zero leakage are non-negotiable. The spring-assisted dual plates close automatically upon flow reversal, typically within 0.2–0.5 seconds depending on line pressure, effectively protecting pumps, compressors, and upstream instrumentation from damaging backflow and pressure surges.

1. Spring-Assisted Dual Plate Design–Fast Closure, Minimal Water Hammer
Quick Response–Two torsion springs act independently on each disc, closing the plates rapidly upon flow reversal. Response time is typically under 0.5 seconds, significantly reducing the risk of water hammer compared to swing check valves which can take 1–2 seconds to fully close.
Reduced Weight–The two semicircular plates weigh less than a single full-bore disc. This lower mass means less inertial resistance during closure, further reducing slamming forces.
Low Pressure Drop–When fully open, the plates lie flat against the flow path. The streamlined profile creates minimal flow restriction–typically ΔP < 0.3 bar at nominal flow velocity.
Short Installation Length–The wafer design means you don't need extra flange space on the valve body. This keeps the overall pipeline length shorter and reduces bending moments on adjacent flanges.
2. EPDM-Lined Body & Vulcanized Seat–Corrosion Protection Where It Matters Most
Full Internal Bore Lining–The entire internal surface of the valve body is lined with EPDM, completely isolating the ductile iron body from the process fluid. The disc, however, remains exposed metal (CF8M)–this is intentional. The EPDM protects the static body from corrosion while the CF8M disc provides corrosion resistance on the moving component, where rubber would be subject to mechanical wear.
Vulcanized Seat (Cured on Body)–The EPDM seat is chemically bonded to the valve body through a high-temperature vulcanization process. This permanent bond eliminates any leak paths between the seat and body, providing bubble-tight shut-off and preventing the seat from shifting, dislodging, or being sucked out under vacuum conditions.
Superior Chemical Resistance–EPDM is highly resistant to water, wastewater, dilute acids (up to 10% concentration), alkalis, and common water treatment chemicals including chlorine (up to 2 ppm) and ozone.
3. Robust Body Material–Ductile Iron (GGG40 / 500-7) with EPDM Lining
High Strength Core–Ductile iron offers tensile strength of ≥400 MPa and yield strength of ≥250 MPa, providing reliable performance under pressure surges and transient conditions.
Impact Resistance–The nodular graphite structure provides exceptional toughness–ductile iron can absorb significantly more impact energy than gray iron without fracturing.
Corrosion Protection–The EPDM internal lining and vulcanized seat ensure the body remains protected even in aggressive media, combining the mechanical strength of ductile iron with the chemical resistance of EPDM.
4. Superior Disc Material–CF8M Stainless Steel (AISI 316)
Superior Corrosion Resistance–CF8M offers excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, particularly in chloride environments and seawater–significantly outperforming 304 stainless steel (CF8) in aggressive conditions.
Wide Chemical Compatibility–Suitable for water, wastewater, mild chemicals, acids, and alkalis. Not recommended for strong mineral acids or high-temperature applications above 200°C.
Extended Service Life–Corrosion-resistant properties ensure long-term reliability even in demanding environments. In typical water service, a CF8M disc will outlast a coated ductile iron disc by a factor of 2–3x.
5. Compact Wafer Design–Space-Saving & Easy Installation
Short Face-to-Face Dimension–The wafer design occupies minimal space between flanges–typically 60–70% shorter than an equivalent flanged swing check valve. This makes it ideal for installations in tight pump rooms, skid-mounted packages, and retrofit projects where pipe length is constrained.
Simple Installation–The valve is centered between two flanges and secured using through-bolts. No additional flange nuts are required on the valve body, reducing installation time and hardware costs.
Lightweight Construction–Up to 85% lighter than equivalent swing check valves, reducing structural load on piping systems and simplifying handling during installation–a practical advantage when working at height or in confined spaces.
Condition | Recommended Type | Reason |
Clean water, low to medium flow | Dual plate wafer check valve, EPDM seat | Low cost, compact, low pressure drop |
Wastewater or raw sewage | Dual plate with EPDM-lined body and vulcanized EPDM seat | Rubber lining and vulcanized seat protect against corrosion, abrasion, and vacuum |
Seawater or brackish water | Dual plate with CF8M disc, EPDM-lined body, EPDM or FKM seat | Superior corrosion resistance in chloride environments |
Oil, fuel, or hydrocarbon service | NBR seat | Good oil and fuel resistance |
High temperature (>120°C) | FKM (Viton) seat | FKM maintains sealing integrity at elevated temperatures |
Aggressive chemicals | FKM (Viton) or CSM seat | Excellent chemical resistance |
Slurry or abrasive media | NR (Natural Rubber) seat | High resilience and abrasion resistance |
High flow velocity | Dual plate check valve | Light plates reduce slamming at high velocity |
Vertical pipeline | Spring-assisted dual plate | Springs assist closure against gravity |
Mounting Orientation–Spring-assisted dual plate check valves can be installed horizontally or vertically. In vertical installations, the flow direction should be upward to assist spring closure.
Flange Alignment–Ensure the pipe flanges are parallel and properly aligned before tightening bolts. Misalignment can cause the valve body to distort, affecting disc movement and sealing performance.
Gasket Selection–Use flat gaskets on both flanges. The EPDM lining does not extend to the flange faces on this model–separate gaskets are required.
Spring Inspection–Inspect springs annually in critical services. Spring fatigue is rare but can occur in high-cycle applications. We recommend replacing springs every 100,000 cycles or as part of a preventative maintenance schedule.
Disc Check–Visually inspect the CF8M disc for signs of pitting or wear during routine pump maintenance. The disc surface should be smooth and free of deep scoring.
