In industrial valve selection, the connection type determines how the valve mounts, but the seat material determines how long it will perform. The seat is the primary sealing component that contacts the disc to isolate the flow.
Selecting an incompatible seat material can result in rapid seal degradation, leakage, and unplanned system downtime. For process engineers and procurement specialists, understanding the operational limits of standard elastomers (such as EPDM and NBR) versus high-performance polymers (such as PTFE) is critical for system reliability.
This article provides a technical comparison of these materials to assist in your selection process.
For the majority of water, wastewater, and HVAC applications, elastomeric seats provide the most cost-effective and reliable sealing solution due to their excellent compression set and elasticity.
EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer): EPDM exhibits outstanding resistance to water, steam, and weathering. It is highly compatible with common water treatment chemicals, including chlorine and ozone, making it the standard choice for municipal water supply. (Our WRAS and ACS approved valves utilize EPDM for potable water compliance).
NBR (Nitrile Butadiene Rubber): NBR is specifically formulated for resistance to mineral oils, greases, and hydrocarbon fuels. In media containing these substances, EPDM would swell and fail, whereas NBR maintains its sealing integrity.
Operational Limitations:
Elastomeric seats are generally limited to operating temperatures below 120°C. Furthermore, exposure to strong acids, solvents, or oxidizers will cause the rubber to harden, crack, or dissolve, leading to seal failure.
When process conditions exceed the capabilities of elastomers—such as with aggressive chemicals or elevated temperatures—PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) is the preferred material.
PTFE is chemically inert across a pH range of 0–14 and resists nearly all industrial chemicals. It also offers a very low coefficient of friction, which reduces the operating torque of the valve and minimizes wear on the disc.
Design Considerations:
Unlike rubber, PTFE is a rigid material with limited elasticity. To ensure a tight seal without requiring excessive torque, PTFE-seated butterfly valves typically utilize a double-offset (double eccentric) design. This allows the disc to lift away from the seat before rotating, minimizing friction and ensuring a metal-to-metal or polymer-to-metal seal only at the final closing moment.
A common point of confusion in valve procurement is the difference between a "PTFE seated" valve and a "PTFE fully lined" valve. They are not interchangeable.
PTFE Seated Valve: Only the sealing ring is made of PTFE. The process media still contacts the metal body (e.g., ductile iron or cast steel) and the metal disc.
PTFE Fully Lined Valve: The internal bore of the body, the flange faces, and the disc are entirely encapsulated in a continuous PTFE layer. The process media has zero contact with the metal components. This configuration is mandatory for highly corrosive media to prevent corrosion of the body and contamination of the fluid.
Process Media / Condition | Recommended Seat Material | Engineering Rationale |
Potable water, wastewater, HVAC | EPDM | Excellent water resistance; compliant with sanitary standards. |
Oils, fuels, hydrocarbons | NBR | Resists swelling and degradation in petroleum-based media. |
Strong acids, alkalis, solvents | PTFE | Chemically inert; prevents rapid corrosion. |
High temperature (up to 200°C) | PTFE | Retains mechanical properties where elastomers degrade. |
High-purity (pharma, food) | PTFE | Non-stick, smooth surface reduces bacterial growth and contamination. |
Selecting the correct valve requires matching the connection type, body material, and seat material to the specific operating conditions.
