Large-diameter butterfly valves are not simply scaled-up versions of smaller valves. At DN1600, the valve becomes a critical piece of infrastructure. Operating torque rises, flow-induced forces increase, and the consequences of a poor material choice or an undersized actuator become much more serious.
This article looks at a specific large-diameter configuration: a double offset butterfly valve in DN1600, with a ductile iron body and disc, an SS420 stem, an SS316 seat, and an electric actuator with worm gear. It explains why each material and design choice matters in large-scale water and industrial systems.
A double offset butterfly valve — also called a double eccentric butterfly valve — uses two offsets to change how the disc contacts the seat.
In a conventional concentric butterfly valve, the disc and seat remain in contact throughout the opening and closing cycle. That continuous contact creates friction, wear, and higher operating torque.
In a double offset design:
The stem is offset from the disc centerline.
The stem is also offset from the valve body centerline.
As the valve opens, the disc lifts away from the seat after only a few degrees of rotation. For the rest of the travel, there is no sliding contact between disc and seat. When closing, the disc moves back into contact only at the final moment.
This design reduces friction, extends seat life, and makes metal-to-metal seating practical. It is one reason double offset butterfly valves are widely used in larger sizes and more demanding services.
At DN1600, the valve is large enough that design choices have real consequences. But double offset is not automatically required at this size. It is a choice — one that makes sense when the application calls for metal seating, lower operating torque, or longer seat life.
A standard concentric butterfly valve with a resilient seat works well for general water and wastewater isolation. It is simpler, lighter, and more economical. For many DN1600 lines, that is enough.
A double offset design becomes relevant when the requirements go further:
Metal seating is needed — for higher temperatures, abrasive media, or applications where elastomer seats would wear or degrade too quickly.
Operating torque needs to be reduced — at DN1600, the disc area is large, and a concentric metal-seated valve would require very high torque. The double offset design lifts the disc away from the seat early in the opening stroke, cutting friction and torque.
Seat life matters more than initial cost — because the disc only contacts the seat at the final moment of closing, wear is reduced and the seat lasts longer.
In short, the double offset design is not a default for DN1600. It is a configuration choice for projects that need metal-to-metal sealing, lower torque, or longer service life. If the application only requires general isolation with a resilient seat, a standard concentric or double flanged butterfly valve may be the better fit.
Once the double offset design is selected, the next step is choosing materials that support its key advantages: metal-to-metal sealing, low operating torque, and long service life. For this DN1600 configuration, the materials are as follows.
Body and Disc — Ductile Iron EN-GJS-500-7 (GGG-50)
This grade offers a specified minimum tensile strength of 500 MPa and 7% elongation, providing a balance of strength and toughness suited to large-diameter valve bodies. The body is epoxy-coated for external corrosion protection.
Stem — SS420 Stainless Steel
SS420 is a martensitic grade chosen for its high strength and wear resistance. In a large valve, the stem must transmit actuator torque to the disc without deformation. SS420 performs well in this role for general water and industrial service.
Seat — SS316 Stainless Steel
SS316 is an austenitic grade with good corrosion resistance in water, seawater, and many industrial fluids. In a double offset design, the disc contacts the metal seat only at the final closing movement, which reduces wear and makes metal-to-metal sealing practical at this size.
Actuator — Electric with Worm Gear
The worm gear provides mechanical advantage, while the electric actuator allows remote control and integration with plant control systems. An ISO 5211 top flange provides a standard mounting interface, so the actuator can be replaced or upgraded without modifying the valve body.
These materials are not the only options. As a China-based OEM/ODM manufacturer, Tianjin Worlds Valve Co., Ltd. can customize the body, disc, stem, seat, and actuator to match your specific media, temperature, pressure, and connection requirements. Alternative materials include carbon steel, stainless steel (304, 316, duplex), and various elastomer or PTFE seats. Actuation can be manual, gear, electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic.

Large double offset butterfly valves are not selected by size alone. They are chosen when the application demands reliable isolation, resistance to corrosion, and stable operation over many years. The DN1600 configuration described in this article — with ductile iron body, SS420 stem, SS316 metal seat, and electric actuator — is particularly suited to the following service conditions.
Industry | Typical Application | Why This Configuration Fits |
Municipal water transmission | Large mains, pump stations, distribution networks | Double offset reduces operating torque at DN1600; SS316 seat resists corrosion in treated and raw water; electric actuator enables remote control from central dispatch. |
Wastewater treatment | Main process lines, outfall isolation, pump discharge | Metal-to-metal sealing handles media that may contain abrasives or debris; epoxy-coated ductile iron body resists external corrosion in humid or buried conditions. |
Desalination and seawater systems | Intake, brine transfer, cooling water lines | SS316 seat and SS420 stem offer good resistance to chloride-bearing water; double offset design allows metal seating without excessive torque. |
Power generation | Circulating water, cooling water, condenser systems | Large-diameter isolation with reliable shut-off; electric actuator integrates with plant DCS; metal seat withstands temperature variations better than elastomer seats. |
Industrial water systems | Steel, chemical, and petrochemical plants | Customizable materials allow adaptation to specific media; double offset reduces wear when the valve is cycled frequently. |
District cooling and heating | Large chilled-water and hot-water circuits | Electric actuator with worm gear provides smooth operation; metal seat performs well in temperature-fluctuating systems. |
In each of these applications, the valve is expected to isolate flow reliably, resist corrosion from the medium, and operate smoothly over a long service life. The combination of a double offset design, corrosion-resistant wetted materials, and electric actuation supports those expectations.
Because every project has its own media, temperature, pressure, and connection requirements, the materials and actuator can be customized. Large valves require careful installation, especially at DN1600. The following points are particularly important:
Pipe support—the pipeline should be supported so the valve does not carry bending loads.
Flange alignment—pipe flanges must be parallel and properly aligned before bolts are tightened.
Bolt tightening—tighten bolts gradually and evenly in a cross pattern to avoid distorting the valve body.
Actuator commissioning—check limit switches, torque settings, and control signals before putting the valve into service.
Periodic inspection—inspect the seat, disc, stem, and actuator during planned maintenance. Check for leakage, corrosion, and smooth operation.
These steps help ensure the valve performs as intended and avoids premature wear or damage.
